Gitksen West Secondary School is seeking respected Gitksen Elders to join our school community as Elders in Residence.
This is an opportunity to share your language, knowledge, stories, and teachings while supporting the academic, cultural, emotional, spiritual, and personal growth of Gitksen youth.
Position Summary
As an integral member of the Wrap-Around Student Support Team, the Elders in Residence provides cultural leadership, mentorship, and guidance rooted in Ayookx, Adaawk, Sim'algyax, and Gitksen values. The Elder helps students strengthen their identity, sense of belonging, wellness, and connection to family, huwilp, pdeek, and community while serving as a cultural advisor to school staff.
Key Responsibilities
• Build positive, trusting relationships with students.
• Provide mentorship and culturally grounded guidance.
• Share Gitksen language, teachings, history, and traditions.
• Support student wellness and cultural identity.
• Participate in the school's Wrap-Around Student Support Team.
• Help connect students and families with community and cultural supports.
• Support land-based learning, seasonal activities, and cultural programming.
• Strengthen relationships between the school, families, huwilp, and community.
• Provide cultural guidance and support to school staff.

• Have experience with land-based learning and community engagement.
• Work collaboratively while maintaining confidentiality and professional boundaries.
Working Conditions
• September to June (40 weeks based on the school calendar)
• 6 hours per day (8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., including a one-hour lunch)
• 1–2 days per week, depending on the number of Elders engaged.
• Flexible schedule to support cultural activities and student needs.
• Participation in occasional evening events and outdoor, land-based learning.
Wages
$240. per day ($40. per hour X 6 hours per day).

• Evaluate student performance and maintain accurate records

Qualifications
• Bachelor of Education in Secondary Education or equivalent
• BC Teacher Certification
• Trades background or Red Seal preferred
• Two (2) years of experience teaching First Nations students and culturally responsive instruction

• Strong knowledge of 21st-century, project-based learning and teaching strategies

Position Summary
Working alongside the Sim'algyax & Gitksen Culture Teacher, the Sim'algyax & Gitksen Culture Mentor serves as the lead language model in the classroom. Through daily use of Sim'algyax, storytelling, Ayookw, Adaawk, traditional knowledge, and land-based learning, the Mentor helps the classroom teacher and students strengthen their language skills, cultural identity, and pride in being Gitksen.
Key Responsibilities
• Speak Sim'algyax throughout classroom instruction to create an immersive language environment.
• Co-teach with the Sim'algyax & Gitksen Culture Teacher to support language learning and cultural education.
• Share Gitksen Ayookw, Adaawk, oral histories, stories, songs, and traditional teachings.
• Guide students in learning about their wilp, pdeek, family connections, and Gitksen values.

About the Position
The Cook works collaboratively with a Nutritionist/Dietician to develop and implement a healthy breakfast and lunch program. This role oversees menu planning, budgeting, food inventory, and daily preparation, cooking, serving, and clean-up. The Cook also supervises the Assistant Cook and works with students participating in college-level culinary programs (Level 1 Culinary Arts with Coast Mountain College).
Key Responsibilities
• Prepare and serve nutritious, high-quality meals aligned with the Canada Food Guide

Job Summary

Key Responsibilities

The EA provides targeted support in academic classes, life skills programs, vocational settings, and community-based learning environments to promote independence, graduation success, and post-secondary transition readiness. Job Summary

Qualifications

• Experience working with youth, preferably in a secondary school, Indigenous community, or social service setting.
• Experience supporting youth experiencing social, emotional, behavioral, mental health, substance use, or family-related challenges.
• Knowledge of adolescent development, trauma-informed practice, positive behavior support, and culturally responsive approaches.
